What are sebaceous cysts? What are comedones?

Comedones and sebaceous cysts are the same thing. They are often called comedones by doctors and sebaceous cysts by everyone else.

They are clogged glands and pores that accumulate sebum. On the nose, they are most often seen as a black or white spot and are often called a blackhead.

Why do I develop sebaceous cysts?
The sebaceous gland secretes a mixture of fats (triglycerides, wax esters, squalene, and cholesterol) and cellular waste, which is discharged as sebum through the sebaceous duct.

Sebum helps to form the skin's slightly oily surface film; it thus helps to keep the skin supple and prevents the skin from losing moisture.

The sebaceous glands are large at birth, then shrink during childhood, and reappear at puberty. This is called maturation of the glands. This occurs with the help of male hormones, especially testosterone.

The sebaceous glands are therefore involved in the development of Acne Vulgaris, blackheads, and sebaceous cysts.

Is sebum production dangerous?
Sebum is important for your skin to stay supple and moist. At the same time, sebum actually contains both antibacterial and antifungal agents, so it's actually quite clever.

What do sebaceous cysts look like?
It can be difficult to tell the difference between sebaceous cysts and pimples, but a sebaceous cyst does not become inflamed.

They are often located on the face but can actually form anywhere on the body where hair grows. That is, everywhere except the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet.

Why do you get sebaceous cysts on your face?
You get more sebaceous cysts on your face and scalp because we have significantly more sebaceous glands in our face and scalp. It's really that simple. You can read about the reasons why they form in one of the other sections.

Sebaceous cysts near the eyes
There are several different skin conditions that resemble sebaceous cysts and form near the eyes. I will not cover these in this guide. I treat regular sebaceous cysts further down under treatment.

Xanthelasma are large, often yellowish, and mostly situated on the eyelids or at the corner of the eye. You should have your dermatologist look at xanthelasma.

Styes, which are also an inflammation, come from clogged pores. They go away on their own; otherwise, eye drops are an option. Otherwise, contact a doctor.

Milia are small, hard encapsulations of dead skin cells. They often appear in small clusters and are mostly very small. These cannot be squeezed and, in the worst cases, must be physically removed by a skilled cosmetologist. Milia can also appear on cheeks and other places on the face.

Can I remove sebaceous cysts myself?

You can easily remove them yourself. With the correct products, you will both remove them and ensure that new ones do not form. You can help them along with a comedone extractor, but before you do, you should read my section about this tool.

What does a comedone extractor do? What does a comedone needle do?
There is also a comedone extractor, which in the old days was a very small spoon with a hole in the middle. You can press this onto the blackhead, and the small blackhead can then come up through the hole. Today it is often a wire loop, but the procedure is the same.
The downside of these comedone tools is that you can cause tissue damage if you are not very careful. And you don't stop the formation of new comedones.

Can I remove sebaceous cysts by squeezing with my fingers?
Oh, how tempting it can be to squeeze out these blackheads and sebaceous cysts. However, you must be extremely careful, as you can easily cause more tissue damage than is good.

A good rule is that you may press with your little fingers, but no more than that. My recommendation, however, is to only use products; they should work over time, and then the whole process happens without fear of damage.

Do blackhead vacuums work?
Yes, I have seen them, and the idea is certainly fun. I have even tested several different ones myself, including one developed for clinical use with a huge motor on the side.

The one at the clinic actually worked on the top of the blackhead, but unfortunately not in the depth. Furthermore, they came back, unfortunately.

The small ones I have tested for home use seem more for fun. None of the ones tested worked as intended. And there was no guidance on how to prevent the blackheads from returning.

Do masks against blackheads and sebaceous cysts work?
I have seen the videos and the pictures. I have tested several, but no matter which client I tested on, I have never managed to produce the same pictures or effect that the advertisements show. So, for my part, the answer is no.

Should I use a cream for sebaceous cysts?
There are both creams and serums that can dissolve your sebaceous cysts, but it is just as important that we also inhibit the production of new ones. So the answer is a definite yes; there are plenty of creams with active ingredients against sebaceous cysts, but remember to also take preventative measures so they don't return. For this, you need to use a rich, delicious cream, such as Raz Skincare Rich

How do you treat sebaceous cysts on a baby?
Sebaceous cysts can also form on babies; in this case, they will usually go away on their own during the child's first year of life.

Do I get sebaceous cysts because of my diet?
Sebaceous cysts have very little or nothing to do with your diet. Of course, it is always good to have a healthy and varied diet, but there is no evidence that including or excluding individual food types results in fewer or more sebaceous cysts, and there is no scientific basis for saying that a changed diet could remove or cause sebaceous cysts.

Do sebaceous cysts change with age?
Sebaceous cysts do not change with our age. Our skin changes, and that can easily lead to more sebaceous cysts for some and fewer for others.

It is probably more essential to monitor how your skin is doing. If you do that, you should be able to go through life without major problems.

How do you treat sebaceous cysts? – these are the products you need

Sebaceous cysts on the face

Morning routine – order and use

1. Raz Skincare Powder to Mousse
By simply using this cleanser morning and evening for 30 seconds, it will eventually drain your pores and quietly remove the dissolved blockages. It foams up as soon as your hands are wet.

2. Raz Skincare Vitamin C
Moisturizing for your skin to keep it as supple as possible; Vitamin C and other active ingredients ensure that any discolorations in the skin are reduced. Apply to the entire face.

3. Raz Skincare Rich Face Cream
This rich face cream contains both active ingredients against the formation of new sebaceous cysts and will also help make the removal of those that break through easier.

Evening routine – order and use

1. Raz Skincare Powder to Mousse
No other cleanser needed; it also easily removes your makeup.

2. Raz Skincare A-retinoid
Apply every evening after cleansing. You can also advantageously apply Vitamin C just before the A-retinoid, but you must at a minimum use A-retinoid. It is precisely the A-retinoid that dissolves the blockages that cause your sebaceous cysts, as well as the sebaceous cysts you already have.

3. Raz Skincare Repair
Sleep with Repair Salve – this way you provide your skin with fat so that it does not overproduce it itself. This might only be necessary for the first few weeks until you have gotten rid of your sebaceous cysts; that is why I only include a Mini Repair 15ml in the kit.

Other treatment
Raz Skincare Cp Chemical Peel
Peeling 1-3 times a week. I recommend Raz Skincare Cp Chemical Peel, as the high content of acid, minerals, and active ingredients will help you with the blockages you have in your skin. Apply in a thin layer and wait 10 minutes before washing off.

Sebaceous cysts on the body

I have not yet created a specific kit for use on sebaceous cysts on the body, but below you will find my recommendations. You can easily buy the products individually.

Morning routine – order and use

Water or mild Body Wash
Wash only with water, and if possible, skip the bath so the skin is not unnecessarily dried out. If you need to be washed, use a mild soap like Body Wash.

Raz Skincare Hh
Moisturizer for your skin, so we keep the skin as supple as possible. Apply only to the affected areas.

Raz Skincare Body Lotion This thick, rich cream is to keep as much moisture in your skin as possible. Even though your clothes dry out the skin, the cream will help you.

Evening routine – order and use

Every evening after cleansing, perhaps you also use Hh in the evening, but you must at a minimum use A-retinoid, as that is what dissolves the blockage that causes sebaceous cysts, as well as what dissolves the already existing ones.

Raz Skincare Repair Salve
Consider using a more fatty salve at night. I recommend my Repair Salve which you put on top of the A-retinoid.

Other treatment
Raz Skincare Mint Scrub
Scrub the area 3 times a week after a long bath. The skin should be warm and wet. Apply 1-3 teaspoons of Mint Scrub to a washcloth and scrub the area thoroughly for 1-3 minutes. Rinse and pat dry.

You must arm yourself with more patience with sebaceous cysts on the body, but they will go away in time. The face is a smaller area, and therefore I use more active agents for this area.

Dietary supplements that can help against sebaceous cysts

20mg Zinc Citrate morning and evening for the first month, then just in the morning.

When will I see improvements in my sebaceous cysts?

Remember that we are all different; for some, it takes 30 days, for others 3 months, before the skin is healed and looks nice again. Yes, you may get flare-ups along the way, but in my 16 years, this treatment has not failed.

I have gathered the products you must have into a kit and given you a good price.

In severe cases – always seek medical attention.

Hugs, Raz
