Anti-aging is one of the most sought-after topics in skincare. Yet, it is also one of the areas where the most misconceptions exist.
Many believe that skin aging is solely about age, having mature skin. The reality is far more complex.
Wrinkles, fine lines, pigment spots, sagging skin, and loss of radiance are due to a combination of biological processes that affect the skin throughout life, but are of course most visible in mature skin.
If you want visibly healthier, stronger, and more youthful skin, it is important to understand what actually happens in the skin. Only when you address the causes behind skin aging can you achieve the best results.
What is skin aging?
Skin aging is a natural biological process where the skin's structure gradually changes.
With age, the skin's production of:

Hyaluronic acid
Collagen is the skin's most important support protein.
Elastin gives the skin its elasticity.
Hyaluronic acid helps the skin bind large amounts of moisture.
When production declines, the skin gradually becomes:

This is a natural part of the aging process.
Why do we get wrinkles?
Today, we know that wrinkles are not due to a single factor. Many experience skin aging manifesting as wrinkles, but for many, pigment spots, loss of radiance, and uneven skin tone are the first visible signs.
Modern research points to five primary mechanisms:
1. UV damage (photoaging)
The biggest cause of visible skin aging is UV radiation.
In fact, many dermatologists estimate that the majority of visible signs of aging are caused by the sun.
UV rays break down collagen, elastin, and the skin's natural defense systems.

2. Collagen loss
From about 25 years of age, the body's collagen production gradually begins to decrease.

Every day, the skin is exposed to free radicals.

Young skin contains large amounts of hyaluronic acid and natural humectants.
With age, the skin's ability to retain moisture decreases.

Why do many anti-aging products not work?
Many anti-aging products promise a lot but only work on a single aspect of skin aging.
Some provide moisture.
Others focus on antioxidants.
Still others only attempt to address wrinkles.
The problem is that skin aging is caused by several mechanisms that influence each other.
If only one mechanism is treated, often only limited results are achieved.

The goals are the same all year round – stronger, healthier, and more youthful skin. But the skin's needs are not necessarily the same in July as in January.

If you have very dry skin, the winter protocol can be used all year round. If you have oily or combination skin, many will find the summer protocol to be the most comfortable for most of the year.
Do I need to use all the products?
No.
Many achieve great results with fewer products.
I have put together this guide based on what I believe provides the best results against skin aging, but you may not need all of them.
